A fire broke out in a shanty located in the slums of Thakkar Bappa Colony in Chembur at around 1 pm on Sunday. A 15-month-old baby girl died in the fire while seven other members of the family were left with severe burn injuries, including a three-month-old baby girl and two children aged 4 and 5. Commercial activities being carried out in the shanty have been identified as the cause of the fire according to the Mumbai Fire Brigade.

While the fire was brought under control and doused immediately, all the occupants suffered burn injuries as the structure was too small and congested for rescue operations.

The deceased, Chandani Jatoliya, 15-months-old, suffered more than 60 per cent burns while her father, Jagdish, is in a critical condition with 80 per cent burns. He has been admitted to Sion Hospital.

According to a fire officer, while the exact reason of the fire is yet being investigated, prima facie it appears that chemicals used for making footwear caught fire. The structure in which the Jatoliya family resided was being used for both residential as well as commercial purposes which resulted in the mishap. All the victims were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar.

A senior medical official from Rajawadi Hospital said that out of the eight patients with burn injuries admitted to the hospital, the 15-month-old baby died while one patient has been referred to Sion Hospital.

The other members of the family, Tanuja (3 months) suffered 10 per cent burns, Sakshi (4 years) suffered 30 per cent burns, Pramod (5 years) with 20 per cent burns, Parvati (23 years) with 5 per cent burns and Prakash (24 years) with 9 per cent burns are currently under treatment in Rajawadi Hospital. Their condition is stable, said an official from Rajawadi Hospital.
