Mumbai: Fire in Kandivali garment factory claims 4 lives

All bodies were identified as workers of the factory.

Four men were found dead in a fire that gutted a garment factory in Kandivali East. The fire broke out on Sunday Evening at about 4pm and the flames were doused by 7.45pm. The search operation started after that and the bodies were found after midnight. All bodies were identified as workers of the factory.

Only a few days after a fire at Marol's ESIC Hospital which killed 11 people, Sunday saw three fire incidents in different parts of the city. As per the information given by the city's fire brigade, they received a call at around 4 pm on Sunday about a fire at a cloth factory in Kandivali's Damu Nagar slum. The cloth factory was a two-storey building. The fire spread rapidly to other hutments after the cylinders exploded. Eyewitnesses told the firemen that three to four people were trapped inside.

The flames were doused by 7.45 pm and the search operations went on using JCB and poclain machines.

"The fire brigade recovered four bodies from the debris by 5am on Monday," a fire official said. The recovered people were taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, where the chief medical officer Dr Tripathi declared them brought dead. As per the information shared by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) disaster department, the deceased have been identified as Raju Vishwakarma (30), Rajesh Vishwakarma (36), Bhavesh Parekh (51), Sudama Lallan Singh (36).

Hundreds of families were rendered homeless and have been accommodated in a nearby garden. These families have been provided with basic amenities and food by the city authority and a few non-governmental organisations.
