As many as 19,686 students will be trying their luck from Wednesday to get a seat in the first-year junior colleges (FYJC) through the first-come-first-serve (FCFS) basis since it could be their last resort to secure admission.

The state education department confirmed that there won't be any more special rounds or 'merit'-based rounds for the admission of 11th standard as casually called. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has over 1.03 lakh FYJC vacant seats.

As per the state education department notification, the students, who have scored over 80 per cent in class 10th and are without a seat, would be given first priority to apply for enrollment through the official website of FYJC between 10 am to 5 pm on Wednesday. Meanwhile, 60 per cent and above category students to get the second preference, followed by 35 per cent and above at third on August 23 and August 26 respectively between the same time.

Students can check the official FYJC website to access the MMR colleges vacancy list. However, as per the availability of seats, students can apply during the given slot of day and time, the notification also read.

A senior official at the education department talking on the FCFS admission said, "Unlike merit basis rounds, there won't be many options to choose for admission FCFS basis. It is mandatory for the students to secure admission in whichever college they get and should apply in the colleges that match to their scored percentage and college's vacancy."

The official further continued, "Students and parents should understand that there is nothing called good or bad colleges. It's the hard work of the student, eventually. There won't be any round based on merit (like general or special round) but only FCFS rounds in the future. Our aim is to allot the seat to each student and will keep conducting FCFS rounds until every one of them is placed."

After the special round which allotted placement for 48,664 students, only 28,978 confirmed their seats in the colleges by securing admissions and paying the fees. The remaining 19,686 will be up for next rounds through FCFS.

Meanwhile, 30,052 are lying vacant in the quota or reserved section in MMR colleges, of which 15,952 is for minority, 5,456 for in-house, whereas 8,644 is for management section. It is on the colleges whether they want to surrender the seats in the general quota or keep it, the official said.

Students who do not secure their admissions in the FCFS rounds will lose the option of trying in any other FCFS rounds.
