Barely three months after eight Humboldt penguins were brought to Mumbai's Byculla zoo, a female penguin among them has died.
The eight Humboldt penguins (three male, five female) were brought to the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Zoo on July 26 from Seoul, South Korea.
According to a press release by the zoo authorities, the penguins were being housed in a quarantine room maintained at 16 degrees to 18 degrees as per international standards.
On 18 October, the female penguin reportedly showed symptoms of dullness, inappetance, greenish stools and laboured breathing. Despite appropriate treatment, the penguin did not show significant improvement and succumbed to illness on Sunday morning at 8.17 am.
The exact cause of death is expected to be inferred after the post mortem report comes in.
Meanwhile, the seven other Humboldt penguins are healthy and under observation.
