Mumbai: FDA to report on pills given to BMC school students by August17

The FDA had collected few supplementary pill samples from the school after Chandani Shaikh, class six student had died and 420 students from the Govandi school were rushed to hospital on August 10.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which collected pill samples for further investigation will be out with its report on the tables that were given to BMC school students by Friday, August 17. Until then, the supplementary pills will not be distributed to BMC schools students across the city.

The FDA had collected few supplementary pill samples from the school after Chandani Shaikh, class six student had died and 420 students from the Govandi school were rushed to hospital on August 10.

Speaking about the samples collected by FDA, DR Ghane, joint commissioner (drug) Mumbai, said, "We have collected four samples of different tablets. The samples include of iron and folic acid tablets which is distributed once in a week and deworming tablet which was distributed across the city's municipal school on August 10. The sample reports will be out next week by Friday."

On Friday, after hearing the death of Shaikh, as soon as the news spread, the BMC authority stopped distribution of the deworming supplementary pills on Friday, which is distributed every year on August 10.

Dr Archana Bhalerao, chairman of BMC's health committee, said, "We have discontinued the distribution of the tablets till the time we get FDA's report on sample testing. The municipal commissioner had order to stop the distribution of the supplementary pills till the sample testing is clear."

The parents of Sheikh claimed she died due to the iron and folic acid tablets given by the Municipal Urdu School Number 2 on Monday, August 6. While the students who were admitted in the hospital yesterday had consumed deworming tablet distributed by the government on the occasion of National Deworming Day, August 10.
