The accused duo has been identified as Ayub Kapadia (55) and his son Yasir Kapadia (28).
The Oshiwara Police arrested a father and son duo for allegedly cheating a Surat-based businessman by forging documents of properties in Surat, the duo had taken Rs 3 crore 7 lakh from the businessman in the city for the said property.
The accused duo has been identified as Ayub Kapadia (55) and his son Yasir Kapadia (28).
According to the police, the businessman Sajid Majikada was approached by Ayub and Yasir in 2014 who claimed to sell a flat and bungalow in Surat. After supervising the said property Majikada agreed to purchase it. The deal was finalised at Rs 3.07 crore and the payment was made in both cash and cheque. After a few months, Majikada realised that the documents given to him by them were forged as the property did not belong to the Kapadia but someone else.
"When contacted, the accused duo refused to give a valid explanation and started ignoring his calls later. Majikada then filed a complaint at Rander police station in Surat which got transferred to Oshiwara since the deal was made in Mumbai. Both the accused were earlier arrested by the Haryana police but they escaped from police custody before being arrested again," said a police officer.
After securing a bail, the duo filed for anticipatory bail from Bombay High Court but it was turned down and were asked to surrender.
"On Saturday we got a tip-off about their presence in a hotel at South Mumbai. The duo was nabbed from there. During interrogation, the duo revealed that they had duped several people in a similar way. There are cases against the duo in Gujarat, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh," the official added.
