Dealing with unknown persons on Facebook proved costly for a South Mumbai based businessman. The victim was befriended by Cyber crooks who duped him to the tune of Rs 25.62 lakh on the pretext of providing him chemicals used for food processing.

According to VP Road police, from March 2018 till July, complainant and Girgaum resident Umesh Pandya, 52, got in touch with an unknown person on Facebook. "As per the complainant, the said person claimed to be a dealer in Brine chemical. The person claimed that he would be able to provide the said chemical to the victim at a cheaper rate," said an officer from VP Road police station.

Brine is a common agent in food processing and cooking. Brining is used to preserve or season the food. Brining can be applied to vegetables, cheese and fruits in a process known as pickling. Meat and fish are typically steeped in brine for shorter periods of time, as a form of marination, enhancing its tenderness and flavor, or to enhance shelf period.

"The cyber fraud and his two associates induced the victim to pay Rs 25.62 lakh. They later stopped communicating with the victim, who later realized that he has been duped. The victim then lodged a police complaint on Friday. Our probe revealed that the Facebook profile used to dupe Pandya was a fake one. We are now taking help of cyber experts to ascertain Internet Protocol address of the computer used to create the said profile," The officer said.

VP Road police have registered a case under sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code and section 66 D (whoever by means of any communication device or computer resource cheats by impersonation) of Information Technology Act.
