The Elphinstone Road foot over bridge that was to be inaugurated on June 30 will now be delayed as the Western Railways has decided to import the roofs for the same instead of using the regular ones currently installed across the suburban railway stations.

The reason for importing the sheets for the roof is that the regular blue and white roofs are only 3 mm thick and wear off easily as compared to the maroon ones being imported from Dubai, which are 9 mm thick and can sustain heavy rain and wind. The new roof will also reflect the sun rays and maintain the temperature.

India has only one, or two, manufacturers making such roofs but procuring them would have taken more time than importing ready-to-use roofs from outside.

“We are sure that by July 3 the FOB will be ready,” said a senior WR official on the condition of anonymity.

On July 1, the semi-tube shaped sheets for the roof have been placed on the entire 40-meters long stretch covering all rail tracks falling under Elphinstone Road and Parel stations. The flooring, electrical and work on the staircases is still underway. There were nine girders, each weighing 26 tonne for the Rs 12 crore FOB. “The FOB at Elphinstone Road will take couple of days more for public to use,” said Ravinder Bhakar, Chief PRO, Western Railway.

The new FOB gives access to Parel station from Tulsi Pipe Road, which also connects the new platforms of Parel Terminus that was recently inaugurated. At present, people alighting at Parel have to use the existing FOB to go towards Elphinstone Road. The new FOB is expected to ease load on the existing south-end FOB that witnessed a stampede killing 23 people in September 2017.
