Mumbai: East-West elevated corridor project to get MMRDA consultant

The congested areas of south Mumbai, including Sardar Vallabbhai Patel Road, which passes through Opera House, Prathna Samaj, Gol Deval, Bhendi Bazar, Dongri and Orange Gate, may get an elevated road as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will be appointing a private consultancy services to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the East-West Elevated Corridor project. This is the second such plan of the MMRDA after the Worli-Sewri Connector project, which did not take off to bridge Bandra-Worli Sea Link at Worli with the proposed Mumbai Trans Habour Link at Sewri.

"We have commenced the process to appoint a consultant to prepare DPR for the proposed East-West Elevated Corridor over Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road connecting Eastern Freeway near P D'Mello Road junction and proposed Coastal Road near Girgaum Chowpatty," confirmed an official. 

The DPR is expected to be submitted by April next year for this estimated Rs300-crore project. This flyover will have a total of four lanes or two lanes in either sides. This 4km-long flyover or elevated road will go over the existing JJ flyover and railway lines of Central and Western Railways to snake through the congested SVP Road to reduce travel time from the present 45 minutes to just around 5 to 10 minutes.

dna had first reported on April 23 this year about state government's plan to have such an East-West connectivity between Girgaum Chowpatty and Eastern Freeway's Orange Gate.

This project will also need nod of the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) for clearance of Coastal Regulatory Zone regulations as it is next to the sea at Girgaum Chowpatty.
