The number of offices and office-goers has increased manifold in BKC in recent years, but infrastructure, whether public transport or roadworks, has remained stagnant. Currently MMRDA, the special planning authority for BKC, has planned many projects to ease up bottlenecks in and around BKC.

4 flyovers, 2 Metro corridors

MMRDA has proposed four road projects of which one is a flyover from BKC up to Bandra-Worli Sea Link, to help motorists skip the Kalanagar junction jammed with thousands of vehicles. The construction has started and will take around 2 years to complete.

Furthermore, MMRDA is also constructing two flyovers measuring 1.2-km and 400 metres from BKC to Vakola junction, and from BKC to Santacrz-Chembur Link Road.

Of these, the construction on BKC-Vakola flyover has started and will be take about one year,. The construction work on the other flyover will start after land is acquired from the Mumbai University.

Another flyover the MMRDA is constructing, which will be thrown open to the public in the coming months, is between BKC and Chunabhatti. Also known as BKC-Chunabhatti connector, it will start from BKC and end near Somaiya grounds on the Eastern Express Highway.

Apart from these projects, two Metro corridors are being constructed to connect BKC with south Mumbai and the western and eastern suburbs.

Construction of the Colaba-Seepz Metro-3 corridor is under way. It will pass via BKC. The other Metro corridor is the DN Nagar-Mankhurd Metro-2B.

According to MMRDA officials, these projects were planned more than five years ago, and have got delayed due to various reasons. However, in the next four years, MMRDA believes that the connectivity to BKC will improve, and the rise in the number of cars will be controlled.
