"The van reached a Central Bank of India ATM centre in Trombay today afternoon to deposit Rs 16 lakh in cash. As the van was stopped and three company officials as well as a security guard got down and started loading the ATM machine, the driver, who was waiting outside, drove away the vehicle containing cash of about Rs 1.28 crore," Trombay police station's senior inspector Ansar Pirjade said.
The driver of a van carrying cash to be deposited in ATM machines of various banks, decamped with Rs 1.28 crore from suburban Trombay on Friday, police sources said.
According to police sources, the van hired by a cash management solution provider named LogiCash, was loaded with cash by the company's Navi Mumbai office to be deposited in various ATM kiosks in the city.
"The van reached a Central Bank of India ATM centre in Trombay today afternoon to deposit Rs 16 lakh in cash. As the van was stopped and three company officials as well as a security guard got down and started loading the ATM machine, the driver, who was waiting outside, drove away the vehicle containing cash of about Rs 1.28 crore," Trombay police station's senior inspector Ansar Pirjade said.
Soon after the incident, company officials called up the police control room number to inform the incident even as the police immediately swung into action and efforts were made to track down the vehicle since it is installed with a GPS navigation device.
Later, the police found the van abandoned in the Matunga area with the cash and driver identified as Amar Singh missing.
An FIR was registered at the Trombay police station and a probe is on, Pirjade said.
The LogiCash Company had hired the vehicle from an individual, who appointed Amar Singh as the driver, police sources said.
