As the mercury continues its relentless upward spiral, the queues outside doctors' clinics are also lengthening. And as always, precaution remains the best form of cure, and doctors have advised Mumbaikars to follow a simple list of dos and don'ts to keep themselves safe and healthy.

Dr Harshad Limaye, internal medicine doctor at Nanavati Hospital, said, "The heat is crossing record levels, and the humidity is also rising. One must be careful while stepping outdoors or being exposed to the sun," Limaye said.

"The heat can cause two problems: Dehydration and heat stroke. One must keep oneself hydrated and stay indoors as much as possible during the day," he added.

Hospitals say they are getting about 10-15 patients every day on average, with a majority of them complaining of dehydration, vomiting, gastroenteritis and heatstrokes. A simple solution doctors have suggested to take care of multiple ailments is to drink water on a regular basis.

Speaking about the cases seen daily, Dr Mohammad Shakeel, head of emergency and trauma department at Fortis Hospital in Kalyan, said, "We are getting cases similar to what we get during the summer. People should drink a lot of water to prevent dehydration."

"Other precautions include wearing light clothing, and to stay indoors as much as possible to protect themselves from the sun," Dr Shakeel added.
