In a major boost to the construction of 107-metre-tall Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has given its clearance for the height of the structure wherein the limit for construction can go up to 144 metre. The memorial will be built off Arabian Sea at Indu Mills on Dadar.

A Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) official said, "We have received no objection from the AAI and the permissible limit is of 144 metre which is more than our planned height of the Memorial which is around 107 metre of 350 feet. However, there are various conditions of the AAI that has to be met."

One of the condition, as per the no objection certificate (NOC) issued by AAI is that, no radio/TV antenna, lighting arrestors, staircase, overhead water tank above the permissible limit of 144 metre.

Further, it adds that no or combination of lights by reason of its intensity, configuration of color may cause confusion with the aeronautical lights of the Airport shall be installed at the site at any time.

The NOC was awarded to MMRDA that is constructing the 350 foot-long Ambedkar Memorial for which it had appointed sole bidder Shapoorji Pallonji in December 2017 at a cost of Rs 709 crore.

The construction of the memorial on the 12-acre Indu Mill land was stuck for several years due to the transfer of land from the Central government to state government. The MMRDA has plans to build an auditorium, a meditation area and a pond along with the memorial. The auditorium will have a seating capacity of around 800 people, and also a museum, library, garden and parking space for visitors.

Meanwhile, around 116 trees are going to be affected for the construction of the memorial of which around 79 trees will be axed and 37 will be transplanted. The MMRDA had floated bids for the construction of Ambedkar Memorial in April 2017, however, the same was re floated back in November 2017 due to poor response.

Further, in the second attempt too, only one bidder showed interest. Subsequently, MMRDA awarded contract to the sole bidder at Rs 709 crore which was higher than the estimations of MMRDA.
