When doctors take the Hippocratic oath, they vow to do everything in their power to help save a life. Doctors of Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital saved the life of a labourer's five-month-old baby, who was suffering from a complex heart ailment by using the child's own tissue instead of prosthetic patches.

"The child had a complex critical congenital heart defect – Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC), which is seen in only one per cent of the total congenital heart diseases. There was obstruction of the pulmonary venous drainage, where the blood vessels carrying pure blood to the heart were both narrow and abnormally connected to the heart," said Dr Manglesh Nimbalkar, paediatric cardiologist.

The doctors discovered that due to the heart condition the blood was returning from the lungs and going into the wrong atrium. Also, the blood vessels carrying the blood were narrow.

While the child was brought to the hospital, he was having difficulty breathing. His body had turned blue due to lack of oxygen in the blood. The doctors performed eight hours long cardiac surgery to save the child.
The doctors used a unique technique known as dual pathway repair, wherein two openings in the left atrium were created for the drainage using the child's own tissues instead of the conventional prosthetic patches. The venous narrowing was also enlarged.

"With the creation of dual openings by using the child's own tissues, it is likely to have a lasting result. This technique is more gratifying than other conventional surgeries," said Dr Shivaprakash Krishnanaik, director, paediatric cardiac science.

"The echo evaluation prior to discharge showed rapidly normalising lung pressures with normal heart functions," said Dr Anupama Nair, Fetal and paediatric cardiologist.
