When his four-year-old boy saw his wife Tanuja lying in a pool of blood, he told the scared child that `she was ill', Umesh Bobale, a 40-year-old dentist arrested on Sunday for allegedly murdering his wife during an argument, has allegedly told the Shivaji Park police during interrogation.

While establishing the sequence of events leading up the argument between the couple and the subsequent murder, the police have learnt that on December 10, Tanuja had booked tickets for a movie playing in a South Mumbai theatre for the three of them. After the movie, the family went out for dinner, during which Umesh allegedly consumed alcohol.

“It isn’t clear if he was under the influence of alcohol or not at the time of the crime,” a senior officer at Shivaji Park police station, said.

The family later met a couple of mutual friends who urged them to reconcile, after which at 3:30am, they returned to their residence at Kohinoor Towers, Dadar.

According to the officer, “After returning home, everything was fine and their son was sleeping in the same room. However, at around 6:30 am, the couple had an argument over money, as she asked for Rs 15,000 for household expenses while he was only willing to give Rs 10,000. After this, Umesh asked their son to leave the room and locked him in another room,”

“During the heated argument, Umesh broke Tanuja’s phone. After sometime, he went to the room where his son was sleeping and got an antique knife to stab his wife. He stabbed her over 20 times with severe intensity,” another officer added. The knife has been seized along with Umesh and Tanuja's phones.

According to the police, the two-bedroom residence where the incident took place belongs to the victim and her father. However, after his marriage, Umesh and his mother both moved into the house. His mother was not at home when the crime took place.

During the investigation, the accused also allegedly revealed that he was very angry with his wife because she was not ‘interested in him’ and she would often fight with him.

A police officer, who did not wish to be named, alleged, “He is a very suspicious kind of a person. He would often accuse his wife of not being interested in him. It was because of this nature of his that she was living at her husband's aunt's house which was very close to their residence. She had also filed a domestic violence case in March and their settlement was due on December 13.”

According to the police, Umesh's marriage to Tanuja was his second. His first marriage had ended in a divorce within a month.

The police is recording statements of Umesh and Tanunja's friends and family.
