A day after Thane Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde ordered a crackdown against liquor dens in the district, a joint operation by the city's Crime Branch and local police carried out a massive raid on Tuesday.

Law enforcement teams stormed into the jungle areas of Palghar and Silvasa - where gangs were producing and distilling the hooch in furnaces.

According to a senior officer, over a dozen barrels of liquor and containers of chemicals, used to mix with the hooch were seized in the raid, apart from seven arrests. "Drums filled with liquor were transported via road and small ships into various parts of the city. We suspect that, this is an inter-state gang at work and will investigate further to crack their operations," the officer said.

Operations across jungles, including parts of SGNP

Crime Branch teams hot on the trail of the liquor-supply chain, have unravelled another shocking information.

According to the team, hooch production and distilling spreads from the jungles of Yeor in Thane, to the green covers of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and stretching to remote forest pockets of Dahanu, Palghar and Bordi.

"These dens are located in deep forest areas...to prevent the smoke of the furnace, billowing in the air, from been detected. Also, labour in the form of adivasi people are cheap, who also provide them with wood for fire and earthen pots for distilling procedures," a Crime Branch officer said.

Minister assures more raids

Speaking to iamin on phone, Shinde assured more of such fast track raids on illicit liquor dens around the island city.

The minister has instructed the Thane Police, Crime Branch and Excise Department to form multiple teams - to locate the hooch production areas, raid and destroy them.

"What has happened in Malad is shocking. Hundred and more people have died after consuming this liquor... which has destroyed families. I have ordered more raids and crackdowns on such gangs and dens. We will ensure that, this tragedy is not repeated ever again..." Shinde said.
