The Special Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) court presided by judge S J Biyani has accepted the application filed by the ACB to search the BMC premises in the failure of the officers to extend help to investigate the 50-crore scam committed by the sewerage department of BMC. The court has accepted the department’s say, which alleged that it had sent reminders 16 times to the department to share the required files, but it was allegedly ignored time and again. Finally, the agency decided to approach the court to issue a search warrant.

The case dates back to the year 2011, when the scam broke. As per the prosecution’s complaint, eight contractors in connivance with the BMC officials duped the corporation allegedly for Rs 50 crores by producing bogus bills for work on Sewer lines and manholes whose work was never carried out. The fraud took place in the year 2007-08, when the contractors were assigned work for repairs, replacement and rehabilitation of sewer lines and manholes across the city. In the year 2010, the BMC Sewerage operation department forwarded a proposal to the additional municipal commissioner (AMC), demanding a payment of Rs 50 crores be made to the contractors in the form of their revised estimate for their work. However when the bills were sought the BMC officials could not produce the required bills and thus the scam was busted.

The officer in his application said, “The agency had issued letters for 16 times to concerned office bearers but till today no document was produced or filed by authority.”
