A couple from Bhayander are striving to preserve the ancient stone inscriptions in Vasai Fort. They have undertaken a trial to stamp more than 100 inscriptions which are lying in a dilapidated state.

Shridatta Raut, a historian and founder of Killa Vasai Mohim, and his wife Geeta have been camping in the fort for the past two days and they are stamping the inscriptions on white hand-made paper by applying ink with cotton balls on four ancient stone inscriptions.

"There are more than 100 stone inscriptions in the fort belonging to the 16th Century. They have been lying in a dilapidated state; some of them are broken while the others are not being preserved. So, we decided to carry out stamping in order to make them available for future generations to study and do research," said Shridatta.

According to Geeta, the Archeological Survey of India has not shown much initiative to preserve these inscriptions which are on the graves, walls and in the premises of the fort.

"We have done this on four stones by first washing the mud off the inscriptions, covering them with a hand-made paper and manually applying ink in the inner portions of the inscription. It is done this way so that the ink does not spread on the outer side and the words which are written in Latin are seen properly," said Raut.

"We will collect the stamping and give it to the libraries or research centers," Raut added.
