Mirza Ghalib Road, better known as Byculla's Clare Road to the Mumbaikar, is soon going to be developed into a selfie point under Nagpada's beautification process. A mural, commemorating the renowned poet, will also be constructed.

The 19th-century poet lodged at 17A Adelphi Chambers in the area for a while and local corporator Rais Shaikh wants to celebrate this memory to keep youngsters interested in him.

Shaikh, who proposed the redevelopment of Nagpada junction along with a sky high flag pole, said there will be two murals at the junction – one commemorating freedom fighter and journalist Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, and the other for Ghalib.

Lyricist and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar lauds the move saying actions like these keep an artists' name in circulation, piquing interest in his or her work.

In Europe, the homes of poets and writers are preserved, and parks are named after them. "From my MP fund, I developed a park named after Kishore Kumar and rangmach is named after Vijay Tendulkar," he cites as example. "So that when people see these names, a desire to know more about them is ignited."

Shaikh has invited suggestions on social media and from various educational institutions on what Ghalib's mural should look like and what it should contain. "My aim is that people from my area should go and click pictures with the wall. Selfie is a trend these days, and I am trying to keep the art of poetry alive through it," said Shaikh. The suggestions can be e-mailed to Shaikh or dropped at his office located inside the BMC headquarters.

Shaikh claims that funds have already been set aside for the mural under the renovation plan. Repeated attempts to contact E Ward officer Vivek Rahi were met with no response.

Selfie-Point

Ideas for the mural can be sent to corporator Rais Shaikh via e-mail or dropped at his office in the BMC headquarters on DN Road. A mural for Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad is also planned.
