A corporator from Borivali (east) has complained to the municipal commissioner about a civil contractor having done a “shoddy job” of repair work to a civic school building in his area. The corporator, Chetan Kadam who is from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, has demanded that the contractor be black-listed and not be assigned any municipal jobs in future.
The repair work of Dattapada Municipal School had been completed two months ago for which the municipality had spent Rs58.56 lakh. However, Kadam has alleged that the contractor has done “substandard quality work”.
Sources in the municipal commissioner’s office said that the education department has been directed to take immediate corrective steps and proceed to initiate action against the contractor.
In June this year, the contractor had been awarded 68 different works – among which included repairs to cracks to the building walls, conduct water-proofing, carry out repairs to toilets used by students, repair doors and windows of all classrooms, fix parapets above windows besides carrying out flooring work of the ground and fix tiles in the compound of the school building. The contractor was given three months – until September for the job.
When dna visited the school, we found that the contractor has merely white-washed walls instead of plastering them, has substituted roofs of toilets with sheets of plywood instead of repairing toilets and providing doors. The leakage in the toilets can still be seen with damp and dripping ceilings and walls. The walls are discoloured with constant leakage and layers of colour popping out. The flooring of the ground in the compound is not proper.
“The tiles can be easily pulled out by hand, making the floor uneven. How can children play on such a ground and not fall. When I asked the teachers, I was told that even despite their requests, the contractor has not built parapets on windows of the staff room and headmaster’s office,” said Kadam.
He said he has demanded that the school’s infrastructure cell register a criminal offence against the contractor as this is forgery. “How can the civic body allow such a fraud,” asked Kadam.
Chairman of the civic education committee, Manoj Kotak, said he would visit the school and probe the matter.
