The Mumbai Police recently wrote to the Centre through the state government, asking for a city unit of Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). This is to ensure a speedy response in cyber crime cases.

CERT is a government-mandated IT security organisation. It's purpose is to respond to computer security incidents, report on vulnerabilities and promote effective IT security practices throughout the country.

"As Mumbai is the commercial capital, it is more vulnerable to cyber attacks. We want a CERT unit here because in case of any urgent case, it takes a minimum of two days for the CERT in Delhi to respond, and on weekends, things are even tougher. Once a local unit is set up, all these issues will be addressed immediately," said joint commissioner of police, crime, Atulchandra Kulkarni.

The police are hopeful of the unit coming up in a couple of months. They are also planning to give netbooks to each officer of crime branch. "Our officers need to be equipped and, hence, providing them netbooks will only help them in emergency situations," said additional commissioner of police, crime, KMM Prasanna.
