Following the mayhem at Diva station on January 2, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Mumbra police have formed teams that will travel in locals in civil attire to get hold of the people who damaged railway property worth crores of rupees.

The number of the accused arrested for vandalising the railway station has reached 33. While 21 have been arrested by Mumbra police, Thane railway police nabbed 7 and Dombivli railway police arrested 5. The arrested people are in magisterial custody from Monday. Initially, the court had remanded them in police custody till January 5.

Talking to dna, a railway official said, "We will be travelling in trains to nab the accused. We are questioning the arrested accused to know if they have any criminal background or are linked to any local gangs."

The newly-formed team members are going to areas in Diva, Thane and Dombivli to ask locals, who were at Diva station on the fateful day, if they have any mobile footage of the accused who pelted stones and damaged railway property.

The effect of the damage on January 2 has lingered on till Monday as the repairs are still going on.

A police officer from Thane commissionerate said, "During investigation, a few residents have told us that the accused are not from their area. They also added that the people who are behind vandalising the railway properties are not frequent travellers. They just joined the mob."

A police inspector from Mumbra police station said, "We are continuously tapping on the locals to check if they have any clues. We are getting different views from the public; some say they have not seen the vandals, while others say that the mob was from Dombivli. Some others on the other hand say that they might be from Diva itself. The name of Thane has also cropped up. We are investigating the case from all sides."
