Mumbai cops book over 50 for Lalbaug ruckus

The police have registered multiple cases against unknown people, who were part of a mob that created ruckus, leading to a riot-like situation at four places in Central Mumbai on Sunday night.

According to police sources, a riot was instigated after a group of youngsters from a particular community, who were part of a religious procession, were stopped at Bharatmata junction for allegedly riding triple seat and on the wrong side by some pedestrians. An altercation broke out, and soon, some people known to the youngsters joined. In no time, news about clashes between the two groups spread in the adjoining areas.

The situation escalated, with the entire area becoming tense, forcing Mumbai Police commissioner Rakesh Maria himself to take to the streets and patrol the area with colleagues and subordinates.

"A traffic policeman did interfere initially and tried to control the situation, but the youngsters had a verbal altercation with him as well," said senior inspector from Bhoiwada Sunil Tondwalkar. "We registered two cases against unknown people and booked more than 50 in the case. One case is registered by the constable who tried to intervene."

The Worli police too registered a case against 50 people, out of which the police have identified 10. All the accused were booked for allegedly assaulting two people and setting their motorcycle ablaze. Another case against a mob of 60 unknown people has been registered at Byculla police station for allegedly restoring to stone-pelting.

"We have registered two cases in our jurisdiction and are in the process of identifying the accused. We have procured CCTV footage of the incident and will be able to arrest the rioters soon," said deputy commissioner of police S Jaykumar (zone III).
