A police constable succumbed to his injuries on Saturday after struggling for a week. Sunil Kadam, the deceased, had sustained grievous injuries when a traffic offender attempted to escape while Kadam was escorting him to the Gamdevi police station. On the way to the police station, the traffic offender crashed his bike against a bench in an attempt to escape from Kadam.

According to the police, Kadam and others were posted at the Pedder Road on May 11. Around 2.30 am, they had stopped three men on a bike as a digit was missing from the number plate. The bikers were unavailable to provide satisfactory answers when asked for their legal documents.

Kadam sat on the bike and asked the bike rider, Sirajuddin Shaikh (24), to drive him to the police station.

However, Shaikh took a U-turn instead began to move towards Haji Ali, disobeying Kadam. Shaikh started riding rashly while hitting Kadam and the bike crashed into a bench in the process, injuring both.

They were rushed to the Bombay hospital immediately. Kadam had suffered injuries to his head, neck, and legs.

"He was hospitalised and the doctors and our department tried a lot to help him but unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries," said Dnyaneshwar Chavan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2). Shaikh, who was discharged on Thursday, was arrested.
