The lower rung of the Mumbai police doesn't seem to be too serious about coastal policing. Recently, during a surprise night visit, a deputy commissioner of police (DCP) found a police constable drunk on coastal patrolling duty. The south region control had asked all personnel on coastal policing duty to be alert, following the firing by navy staff on a fisherman at Uttan coast. The constable has been suspended.

According to the police, in the last week of May, constable Ghanshyam Pote, who is posted with the Marine Unit of the city police, was on duty at Worli Jetty under the jurisdiction of the Bandra police station.

"DCP (port zone) Kirankumar Chavan paid a surprise visit to the jetty and found Pote drunk on duty. An inspector from Bandra police station was then asked to get Pote's medical examination done at Bhabha hospital," said a police officer.

"With regard to coastal security, all officers and staff of Marine Unit have been asked to stay alert. On May 17, after the firing by a navy personnel on a fisherman off Uttan coast, specific instructions were given... but Pote was found drunk on duty. This negligence is very serious in nature and, hence, Pote has been suspended."
