The portion of the wall that came down in Sandhurst Road station will now be checked by IIT Bombay experts. MHADA has decided to repair the 130-ft wall and has sent the design prepared by the architect to IIT Bombay experts. In most likelihood, by the end of the week, tenders will be floated to rope in a contractor to begin the repair work. However, a local Congress MLA has been demanding maintenance of the entire 1.4-km stretch of the wall so that there is no possibility of an untoward incident in future.

Last week, a meeting was held at the site, along with senior officials, who finally agreed that MHADA will carry out the repair work. Apart from the officials, MP Arvind Sawant and MLA Amin Patel were also present there. The estimated expenditure is close to Rs 2 crore and will be made available by the Collectors Office under the District Planning Committee funds head.

DK Jagdale, Chief Officer, MHADA's repair board, confirmed sending the design to IIT Bombay for seeking their expert view on it. "We have sent the design to IIT Bombay experts. After their suggestions come in, we will float tenders to appoint a contractor for the work. The funds will be released by the Collector Office," he said.

According to Patel, after the meeting, it was decided that for now, MHADA will carry out the repair and funds from the Collector Office will be used to do so. He said, "I am also writing to the Railway Minister and the ministry, asking them to repair the whole 1.4-km wall starting from Carnac Bunder Bridge to Dongri Police station. This will mean that all the buildings, residential, and rail tracks will then be secured. If Rs 2 crore is needed to repair a 130-ft stretch, for such a long stretch a lot of funds will be required and we are hoping that the Railways will carry out the work."

Patel also said that IIT Bombay experts have suggested some changes to the design they sent; once those are incorporated, within a day or two tenders will be floated, and seven days from then work will begin.
