From a complete curriculum overhaul to introduction of interdisciplinary courses, Mumbai institutes are now planning to march ahead in all aspects after being granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission(UGC) on Tuesday.

Two Mumbai colleges — Jai Hind College of Arts, Science and Commerce and Mithibai College in Vile Parle were among the seven institutes in the city to have got autonomous status. Dr Ashok Wadia, principal, Jai Hind College said, "We have already integrated some of the key elements of autonomy like giving skill based education, emphasising on research etc. With this we are looking at imparting value based education while aiming to make our students better citizens. We are also looking forward to developing some interdisciplinary programmes and will also continue collaborations with international institutes to help student get the real field exposure" he added.

Mithibai College is elated to get the status even without a field visit by the UGC. "The college will now be able to greatly contribute to bridge the academia-industry gap by being able to redesign the curriculum as well as amend it time to time to meet global standards. We are planning to implement bar-coding of answer sheets as well as on-line assessment for evaluation of answer sheets to make it a completely transparent process" added Dr Rajpal Hande, Principal, Mithibai college.

Dr Rajan Saxena, Vice Chancellor at the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) which gained the status of an institute deemed to be a university said, "We are planning to start a multidisciplinary research centre soon.
