To celebrate the resilient spirit of Mumbai, ahead of the fifth anniversary of the 26/11 terror attack, the Welingkar Institute of Management in Matunga took the ‘Pledge of Peace’ on Friday, an initiative undertaken to spread peace and forgiveness.

With the slogan ‘Today and everyday, I will bring peace to the world by respecting the dignity of life in myself and in everyone I meet’, the initiative was titled ‘We Wish You Peace’. Welingkar Institute aims at spreading peace in the country and celebrating the survivors’ courage.

Kia Scherr, one of the survivors who lost her husband and daughter in the attack, said, “I think, right now, we should build the power of peace and live up to the spirit of Mumbai. After my husband and daughter were killed in the attack, I am determined to create the opposite of terrorism, which is love. It increases the power of peace in many ways. The people in the city together can spread peace. And this initiative is just the beginning.”

Similarly, other colleges in the city too have planned various events for the anniversary. Jai Hind College principal Ashok Wadia said, “Our students will be participating in a remembrance programme at the Gateway of India. It is a great way of paying homage to the victims of the attack.

Such a programme will alert the citizens and generate patriotism among the students.”

On the other hand, MD College in Parel plans to conduct a condolence meeting in classrooms. To invoke a sense of responsibility, they further plan to have an elocution competition highlighting the impact and possible solutions to terrorism.

“November 26 is often remembered only in terms of the tragic incident. This very day also stands as Constitution Day of the country. To enlighten the students, after the condolence meet, we plan to organise a lecture on Basic Principles of the Indian Constitution,” said Priyesh Tripathi, a second-year student at MD College.
