The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is in a hurry to clear proposals for its nullah cleaning project before the code of conduct for the general elections is implemented. The civic administration has come up with an all-inclusive proposal to clean nullahs in the western suburbs, which otherwise could have come in the form of 16 different proposals. The total cost of the contract is estimated at Rs 35 crore. The sum includes the cleaning of Mithi river too.

Nullahs act as storm water drains to drain out rainwater. But, due to piles of garbage, the BMC has to clean it up before every monsoon season. The nullah cleaning work is divided into three parts. The first part starts from April 1 and is expected to be completed by May 31; the contractor is supposed to clean 70 per cent silt before the onset of monsoons. The second part is executed during the monsoon season and the third part is carried out after the rains. Every year BMC come with different proposals as per the wards and area but this year due to general elections are near the stormwater drainage department has come with an inclusive proposal for all the nullahs from Western suburbs. "This is an important work for a hassle-free monsoon. The cleanup work should start from April," said an officer from the BMC.

Major Nullah's length is 248 km, minor nullahs are 421 km in length and Mithi river is 20 km in length. BMC hires contractors to desilting nullahs in parts. This year, the BMC had called for tenders worth Rs 60 crore to clean 26 major nullahs, besides tenders worth Rs. 41 crore to clean 18 small drains and tenders worth Rs 28 crore to clean Mithi River. Nearly Rs. 10 crores will be spent to desilt one km stretch of Mithi river

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is spending Rs. 10 crores to desilting approximate 1.3 km stretch of the Mithi River, from Mahim creek to Bandra Sion link road. BMC will clean Mithi river in four parts, two in eastern suburbs, one in a western suburb and one in the south city. The BMC is going to spend Rs. 10 crore on the merely 1.3 km stretch. An officer from the BMC explained, the 1.3 km stretch is near the creek, where the river is wide. "The cost escalated because BMC doesn't have dumping ground available for the dumping of silt. So the contractor has to search a private land on his own," said an officer. The BMC will pay an approximate Rs. 17 per metric ton of silt.
