With an aim to create awareness related to monsoon diseases, the civic body along with a private hospital checked around 100 residents from Dharavi area. As per the health camp check-up, the hospital has reported that 70 per cent of people who they checked had allergic rhinitis — an allergic response causing itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and other similar symptoms, because of poor hygiene and allergy in the environment.

The ENT specialist also revealed that around 30-40 per cent were detected with digestive disease — a gastroesophageal reflux disease in which stomach acid or bile irritates the food pipeline.

As per the general physician from a Jaslok Hospital, major problems included fungal infection. The second most common problem was hypertension, due to stress.

Dr Om Shrivastav, Director — Infectious Diseases, HIV medicine, and Immunology at Jaslok Hospital, said: "Majority of the problem (infection) is related to sanitation, water, and hygiene. We tried to create awareness related to the disease. Middle-aged residents were majorly infected with fungal infection."

Seasonal diseases play a havoc, and there is loss of human life every season due to lack of awareness. "People should take care of their health and take medical service rather than treating themselves with a home remedy," said Dr Shrivastav.

TM Jagdish, corporator, Ward no 185 Sion, said: "Dharavi is one of the biggest slum areas in Mumbai and it has recorded the highest waterborne diseases during monsoon in the past. To avoid the same this year, an awareness drive is being conducted. The medical services provided by the team were above our expectation."
