The first weekend of July witnessed almost a continuous downpour in the city, with a cumulative amount of 113.4 mm and 66.4 mm rain being recorded respectively at Santacruz and Colaba. This also takes the season's total up to 936.5 mm and 689.9 mm till 8.30pm on Sunday.

While predictions of heavy or intermittent showers continue, current records also show rainfall to be in excess compared to normal by 94.64 mm and 44.8 mm at both the areas. "The rainfall has been good till now. It is in excess compared to the normal rainfall expected during this time," said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, meteorology. As per the cumulative rainfall graphs released by the IMD, the monsoon picked up pace in the city post June 26 and has been on the rise ever since.

The graph is expected to increase in the coming days, with heavy and isolated rains predicted over the next 5 days. "There will be intermittent showers covering at least 50% of the city. We have issued warnings of heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours at least," he added. The maximum temperatures would be 29 degrees Celsius and the minimum would be 24 degrees Celsius during these days.

While the city is receiving good rains, a few parts of the state — including Marathwada and Paschim Maharashtra — are witnessing deficit rainfall (less than normal). For these areas, scanty to moderate rainfall has been predicted in the following week. Meanwhile, monsoon clouds have covered most of the country. "Only a few parts of Rajasthan are left (for the cloud cover to reach in). The monsoon clouds have reached everywhere else. In the next 24 to 48 hours, the whole country will be covered," Hosalikar further said.
