With a month to go for the Ganeshotsav festival, large mandals in the city are planning to welcome the Lord with various themes (pandal decorations). This year, after the state government announced its desire for eco-friendly decorations, the large pandals are trying their best to go green.

The mandals have been researching on themes since the past few months, and have already begun constructing the pandal for the 11-days festival, which will start from September 13.

This year, celebrating its 91st year, the Lalbaugh-based Ganesh Galli mandal will be making a pandal, which will replicate Gwalior's Surya Mandir (sun temple), located at Madhya Pradesh. Last year, the mandal had displayed Vellore's Suvarna Mandir (Golden Temple).

Speaking about going eco-friendly, Adhwait Pedhamkar, committee member, Ganesh Galli, said: "For the decoration, we are mainly using fibres and wood, which can be used for some other purpose after the pandal is dismantled. Till last year, we were majorly using PoP for decoration, this year, we have used hardly five per cent PoP for the purpose of decoration."

He further added: "For more than a decade now, we have been displaying a replica of the various temples across the country. Everybody is not lucky to visit various temples situated across the country. Through the replica of temples as a pandal, we want the devotees to see the lesser-known temples."

Another mandal — Andhericha Raja in Andheri — has started to make a replica of Chintamani Temple, located in Pune. The temple is one of the famous temples on the Ashtavinayak trail.

Uday Salian said: "The work on the replica began on August 6. We are mainly using wooden material. Only, the finishing touch on the main gate will be given by PoP. We are not using PoP anywhere else."
