Seeing no change in the behaviour of many who take out their dogs for a walk but leave the poop behind despite BMC guidelines, active residents from Charkop in Kandivali have initiated a public campaign from Wednesday to resolve this issue in their neighbourhood.

According to local activist and resident of Sector 8, Mili Shetty, the 90 feet road in their area was the worst affected and was littered with dog poop. "Being a wide and long stretch, this road attracts several pet owners not only from here but even from neighbouring localities to walk their dogs in the morning. A majority do not clear the poop, which not only affects the morning walkers but also the pedestrians. Despite BMC announcing a fine of Rs 500, the dog walkers are still not following the guideline," she said adding that not only her area but residents from Sector 1 to 9 were also complaining about the same issue. This issue has prompted a few active locals to initiate a campaign. They have formed a team namely Green Team Charkop to resolve the issue.

The team of residents held a meeting with the R-South ward Assistant Municipal Commissioner, Sanjay Kurhade and decided that firstly, awareness amongst the pet owners should be created by few locals along with BMC staff post which the BMC could penalise the offenders.

"We initiated the campaign from Wednesday in Sector 8. Between 6.30am to 9 am along with BMC staff we meet and speak with the dog owners, requesting them to pick up the poop so that they can help us in keeping the neighbourhood clean. The BMC staff also hands them a pamphlet explaining the rules," said Shetty adding that soon the same initiative will be carried out in other sectors of Charkop as well.

A retired government official who takes his dog out for walks daily in Sector 8 said that as a pet owner it was their responsibility to also take care of the poop. "We request the pet owners to carry a scooper and clean the poop but many fights with us," he said.
