On October 2, the 146th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated in the city in varied ways. As it is also the day when the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan was launched last year, most students engaged themselves in cleaning the city, while others took up a peace rally.

It is said that cleanliness is next to godliness and Mahatma Gandhi often advocated cleanliness of the mind, body, soul and surroundings. As a tribute to his thoughts, nearly 120 college students of Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil (KBP) college, Wagle Estate, Thane, organised a cleanliness drive on Friday morning. The two hour drive which was from 9am to 11am took place near Thane station area.

In this drive, the students not only cleaned the surrounding area but even created awareness among the passersby and most importantly, hawkers. "We made the bus driver, conductors and even hawkers to pledge that they will keep the area clean and spare time to clean it," says Santosh Gawde, principal, KBP college.

To ensure that their morning efforts do not go waste, some of the students also went to supervise the cleaned area in the evening. Thankfully, their efforts did not go in vain. Moreover, they also educated the hawkers in the area to keep a dust bin with themselves, so that they do not litter the streets. "Next week, we will provide them small dust bins to ensure that this drive is not a one-off thing," he says.
