An 18-year-old boy bit a Government Railway Police constable’s hands when he prevented him from entering a ladies’ compartment on the Harbour line between Cotton Green and Dockyard Road railway stations on Thursday morning.

Asif Sayyed, 27, a constable of Wadala Railway police station, was posted on duty in the ladies compartment when Sukhar Ali Sheikh tried to board it at Cotton Green station around 1.10am.

Sayyed stopped him from entering and when he frisked him, he found a knife in his pocket.

“There was one woman in the compartment with her nine-year-old son. I suspected foul play and frisked Sheikh and found a knife hidden in his trousers,” said Sayyed.

“The train had started moving and was between Reay Road and Dockyard Road stations. As soon as I seized the knife, Sheikh bit my hand to escape,” said Sayyed.

“But, I overpowered him and held him tightly. I told the woman to pull the alarm chain. When the train pulled into Dockyard Road station, I dragged him out and shouted for help. A few commuters, who were on the platform, rushed to my help,” said Sayyed.

“A resident of Govandi, Sheikh has been booked under sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from discharging his duty) and 353 (assault to deter public servant from discharging his duty)  of the Indian Penal Code as well as sections of the Bombay Police Act,” said Jitendra Kumar Rathod, senior inspector of Wadala railway police station and added that he was remanded in police custody till January 20.
