With heavy rains lashing the city on Friday, the BMC was flooded with water-logging complaints, along with tree-falls and wall collapses across the city.

According to the India Meteorology Department, the Colaba and Santa Cruz weather stations recorded 47.7mm and 102.8mm rainfall respectively between 8.30am and 8.30pm. The civic body’s automatic weather stations recorded an average rainfall of 82.36mm in the city, 83.36mm in the eastern suburbs and 81.11mm in the western suburbs.

While King’s Circle recorded the highest rainfall of 124.99 mm, Dadar received 119 mm and Wadala 114 mm. Bandra received a high of 121mm in the western suburbs, and Chembur in the eastern suburbs recorded 95mm rainfall.

IMD officials attributed the heavy rainfall to the low pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal and to an active offshore trough. “While the Konkan area will receive the heavy rainfall in the next two days, the city is likely to receive heavy rainfall at a few places,” said NY Apte, deputy director of IMD, adding that a heavy rainfall warning had been issued.

Water-logging cases were received from across the city. From chronic flooding spots such as Hindmata, Hindu Colony lane 1 in Dadar, Maheshawari Udyan in King’s Circle, MG Road, Mahim, Milan Subway, Air India main gate in Santa Cruz (E), Oberoi Mall in Goregaon (E), Lokhandawala Circle, Andheri (W), Bhoir Nagar in Mulund (E) and RC Marg in Chembur.

The BMC disaster control unit received at least 38 complaints of tree-fall and few cases of slab collapse. Citizens blamed the civic body for its poor monsoon preparedness. Civic officials said that water-logging cases were reported from low-lying areas of the city. “The de-watering pumps were pressed into service in the flooded areas to flush out and away the water,” said a senior civic official.
