The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is in a final stage to approve plans for two rail over bridges on either side of the existing Mahalaxmi railway station bridge. The bridge is in a dilapidated condition but can’t be closed due to heavy vehicular traffic. BMC has been preparing the plans for the past two years. The ready plans now wait for the Western Railway nod. Once it’s approved, the civic body will invite tenders for the city’s first cable-stayed bridge on railway tracks.

The Mahalaxmi rail over bridge (ROB), popularly known as the T Bridge, was constructed in 1920. The bridge is more than 100 years old and carrying more vehicles than its capacity. Even though the bridge is not in good condition BMC can’t close it. Therefore, BMC officials planned to build two ROBs on either side of the existing Mahalaxmi ROB.  One bridge will connect Dhobi Ghat from Eastside to Dr E Moses road in the west, and another will connect Keshavrao Khadhye Road to Haji Ali side of Dr E Moses road.

The plans were ready two years back but BMC had a hard time to get clearance from the railways. BMC had planned both bridges on the cable-stayed network just like the Bandra-Worli Sea Link because both the bridge would run over railway tracks and pillars cannot be used to construct them. Now, the only cable-stayed bridge that is proposed is the Keshavrao Khadeway route to E-Moses Road. The approximate cost of construction of both bridges is Rs 200 crore. BMC will float a tender after the railway’s approval. After obtaining approval from the BMC Standing Committee, it will take 2 or two-and-a-half years to build the bridges.
