Mumbai businessman duped by hacking client's email id

The LT Marg police are on the lookout for an unidentified person who duped a South-Mumbai based firm of Rs 6 lakh after hacking their client's e-mail id and seeking payment for material supplied.

The complainant, Jasmit Sakhariya (34), runs a business of textiles in Kalbadevi. He had recently received an e-mail from an id belonging to one of their suppliers. Police said, the accused had e-mailed a letterhead with a signature of the company's directors for supplying the goods and had demanded the money to be transferred to a bank account in Uttar Pradesh.

Sakhariya transferred the money to the given account. However, when he contacted the supplier to verify if he has received the payment, the complainant was in for a shock. The client revealed they had not sent any such email.

"It was then the victim realised that something was amiss and approached us. Upon contacting the supplier, we found out that their email id was hacked and the letterhead and signatures were forged. After verifying their claims, we have registered an FIR and a probe is on," said a police officer from LT Marg Police Station.
