As part of the revised footpath policy, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to do away with paver blocks and give city footpaths a new look. The upper layer of the footpath is set to have marble chips and brooming texture design.

After receiving severe flak for uneven and inconvenient footpath, the BMC decided to do away using paver blocks. Now, paver blocks will be removed and cement concrete layer will be laid.

"Challenges and problems have been identified while implementing the footpath policy. Now, all the footpath will be managed as per the new the revised policy," said a senior civic official.

He added that tripping on chipped paver blocks will not be a thing of the past soon. "We will design the upper layer to make it look like marble chips or brooming pattern," said the official.

Recently, the administration had brought a proposal in the standing committee to use paver blocks. But, it received criticism and the proposal was held back. Many people had received injury after falling in footpath due to tripping paver block. In 2016, the BMC had publicly announced that paver blocks would not be used on roads anymore.

As part of the new policy for footpath, road with 60-feet width with 'paver block' will be made as 'cement concrete' and there will be 'marble chip' finishing.

Similarly, roads that are 90-feet wide and footpaths which are more than 2 metres in width will be 'stencil concrete' or 'cement concrete'. Also, there is proposal for 'marble chip' finishing.

It is believed that the BMC official got the idea of deign after their recent visit to New York for a conference and saw designs of pavements there.

"We received very poor response to paver blocks. We also got repeated complaints regarding the poor quality. It also required heavy maintenance and high cost," said the official. However, concretised footpaths constructed in the eastern suburbs are successful.
