The substandard work of laying storm water drain (SWD) pipeline came to the fore in city’s Central area in South Mumbai after locals found irregularities in civil works. Locals complained to the civic administration, and a visit of civic officials found the irregularities.
The civic administration slapped fine on the contractor and asked him to repair the whole thing.
The central agency of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had given contract of strengthening and improving various major roads in asphalt in city division in D ward, to Prakash Engineering and Infra Project (P) limited and Gyan construction. The cost of the project is around Rs 104 crore and it included relaying of storm water drain pipeline wherever required.
As per the contract, the contractor had to make a concrete surface before laying SWD pipeline. Anil Nagre, a Maharashtra Navnirvan Sena member and civic activist said that he along with other locals noticed substandard work. “We complained to the contractor and also informed civic official about substandard work,” said Nagre. He added that he also submitted a written complaint to the civic chief.
After Nagre’s complaint, civic officials visited the site and found irregularities. A senior official from the road department said they found irregularities in the work and issued notice to the contractor. He added that civic administration also fined Rs 10,000 as per the provision.
BMC’s Road department also directed the contractor to remove pipe laid between a particular section and carry out work as per specifications in the work order.
