Two days ago, a group of Dharavi residents from Sector 1, had held a protest at the MHADA office, where the Dharavi Redevelopment Project office is located. The demand of these protesters is that they need bigger homes than the slum dwellers as they already occupy homes which are as huge as 380 square feet carpet area and beyond in certain cases. The DRP has issued them a letter stating that it had informed prospective bidders about negotiation with the residents over the redevelopment project.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project has caught almost every city person's attention and imagination. However, there are a few who reside in Dharavi and are unhappy; they, therefore, led a protest to the DRP office located inside the MHADA building in Kalanagar, Bandra. These are people from Sector 1 of Dharavi. This sector unlike the other four sectors of Dharavi mostly consists of buildings and chawls and are irked over being treated like slum-dwellers. Their issue is that they want bigger homes. DRP claims that the size of homes for these residents has not yet been frozen and they are trying to find transit accommodation for people very close to Dharavi. If all options fail, Mahul will be considered.

Rajesh Sharma, a member of the DRP Sector 1 Vikas Samiti, said that the residents were upset and hence they held the protest. "The reason we are protesting is we are legal tenants and demand bigger homes. We are looking for homes between 750-850 square feet. We have received a letter from DRP stating that before any decision is made, a negotiation with bidders will be held. However, it is difficult to say whether it is a success or not now."

There are close to 150 buildings and many chawls along with shops in Sector 1 of Dharavi.

R B Sankhe, the deputy chief engineer, DRP said, "We gave them (residents) the letter and stated that the area will be negotiated. It cannot be one-sided, and hence there's DRP. We will hear both the parties and will decide on something that is favourable for both and doesn't eat into anyone's right."
