The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) will meet Tata Power (TPC) seeking explanation on reasons for the outage and delay in repairing the problems. On August 6, BEST officials at a media conference stated that they will hold a meeting with the TPC as power cuts were seen for a good 3 hours.

The BEST officials said that ideally the response time should not exceed 2 hours, in case feeder trips. The authorities will also discuss about improvement needed transmission network - which gets electricity into Mumbai - that is handled by TPC.

“The response time is what we are concerned about. The power was not back for three hours and so will meet Tata Power asking them reasons for the delay,” said Surendra Bagde, General Manager, BEST Undertaking.

Several parts of South and Central Mumbai saw power cuts on Saturday after Tata’s receiving station at Mahalaxmi tripped. The affected areas – managed by 14 BEST transformers – included Pedder Road, Mahalaxmi, Prabhadevi, Worli, Lower Parel and Tardeo. The restoration was done between 9.15pm to 9.50pm while the tripping happened at 6.55pm.

The problem was with the 22 Kv receiving station which was resolved at around 8pm by TPC but yet power restoration took time. At present TPC supplies 700Mw plus power to the BEST which then distributes to 10 lakh consumers. On June 12, parts of central and south Mumbai had witnessed outage for more than two hours after Tata Power’s receiving station at Dharavi tripped.

The BEST is already seeking other power distributors and replace TPC. “Once we finalise things, we shall then go to Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission,” added Bagde.
