BEST’s General Manager’s dilapidated house in Colaba’s Electric House is set to undergo repairs as the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport is carrying out overhauling of its headquarters. The BEST headquarters was built in 1873, at a cost of Rs 32.16 lakh. It is important to note that the BEST undertaking is reeling under Rs 1100 crore loss.
The Electric House is the headquarters of BEST, which is a heritage building. The undertaking has proposed a detailed repairs that also includes revamp of the GM’s residence on the third floor of one part of the Electric House. This apartment is above the offices and faces the terrace-garden. There is a spiralling staircase which leads to the GM’s residence facing the Colaba market.
Among the repairs being proposed for the residence, there will be repair work on existing rainwater roof gutters, rainwater pipes, Mangalore tile roof, dilapidated roof slab etc at a cost of Rs 3.82 lakh. It is part of the total cost. Apart from this, the BEST is also repairing several portions of this iconic building.
These include repairs to the RCC beams, waterproofing treatment, strengthening deteriorated steel structures, repairing plasters inside the rooms, replacing defective aluminum windoes and other allied works. “We are repairing all those staff quarters and buildings that need urgent attention. We are attending structures that need repair work,” said Surendra Bagde, General Manager, BEST Undertaking.
