A Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) bus met with a major accident on Wednesday morning in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex, leaving seven persons severely injured. The BKC police have registered a case against the bus driver and are investigating further.

The driver, Ramesh Dhondu Patil was plying on route number 310 from Bandra railway station to Kurla railway station when the incident took place. He was reportedly trying to overtake another bus, which led to the upper deck colliding with a huge tree branch outside the Bandra family court. The upper deck was completely damaged after the collision and passengers stuck in the bus had to be pulled out and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Farhan Shaikh (18), Manoj Saroj (22), Mushraf Saroj (16), Santlal (39) and Subodh Singh (40) were rushed to the Guru Nanak Hospital for treatment while Praful More (35) and Arvind Sanghani (45) were rushed to Sion hospital for treatment.

“The accident occurred at 12.40 pm, five passengers are being treated at Guru Nanak Hospital and two others to Bhaba Hospital,” said a BEST official. An enquiry has been launched into the accident.

Kalpana Gadekar, Senior Inspector, BKC police station said, "We have registered the case under section 279(rash driving), 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Motor vehicles act."

"The driver did not sustain injuries and further actions will be taken against him for negligently driving and risking lives of the commuters.", said Gadekar.

The double decker buses are iconic to Mumbai and this is the second accident in the same area. Back in 2012, a double decker bus had toppled at Kala Nagar, barely 200 metres from the present accident location.
