Mumbai: Bengal Club to showcase Navdurga avataar for Navratri

The Bengal Club — celebrating its 80th anniversary this year — will be showcasing nine different avatars of Goddess Durga for Durga Puja. Other than this, all rituals will be carried out in a traditional manner so that people can get a feel of how it is supposed to be done.

"We are among the few Durga Mandals that have Kumari Puja. Besides, there will be series of traditional pujas with cultural programs that is likely to be attended by many," said Gautam Chatterjee, president of the Bengal Club and additional chief secretary with the state government.

"The idols will be put on display for blessings on Sunday as soon as the sthapna is done," added Chatterjee.

The first aarti will be held on Maha Shahsti which falls on Monday. It will be conducted by priests who have been performing aartis at the club for several years. Bhog prasad will be served on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Since we have always been traditional, there will be khichdi for prasad. This year we are also taking several fire safety measures. All the Bengali deliciacies that are a hit among people will be served hot but not cooked here for security reasons," said Mitali Choudhury, a member of the club.

Sandhi Pooja — which is the conjunction of both the Ashtami and Navami day — that gets a number of devotees will be held from 8.11am to 8.59am on Wednesday. "It is said that Lord Ram invoked the Godess during this period. 100 lotuses and 108 diyas are lit on the ocassion," added Choudhury.

Most people are expected to be come on the Ashtami and Navami day which is falling on the same day. "First half of the day will be Ashtami while the second half will be Navami," said Chatterjee adding, "Most people come on this day and we are expecting the footfall to cross the million figure mark."
