Despite a dip in the overall enrolment numbers, Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) continues to be the top preference this year for students aspiring to study under various colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai. Close to 29 per cent of the total number of applications for 2018-19 were made for BCom even as the number of applications for the course fell by around 50,000 as compared to that in 2017-18.

Until Monday evening, which was the final day for applications, over 2.75 lakh students had applied for various undergraduate courses at the varsity's 700-plus affiliated colleges. The overall number of applications also went down to over 8.54 lakh this year as compared to 9.9 lakh in 2017. Varsity officials said that the dip might be owing to the fact that students had more time to submit their applications last year with a longer application window.

Several self-financed courses such as BCom in Banking and Finance, Banking and Insurance, Financial Markets, etc continued doing well with a large number of students being attracted to these courses.

Shobhana Vasudevan, Principal, RA Podar College of Commerce said, "Despite the demand for BCom and other allied courses, several Commerce students are now switching to Arts to take up civil services and explore other career opportunities that come with the stream. This seems to be a trend that is slowly catching up.

Bachelor of Science (BSc) saw the second largest takers with 71,330 applications coming in for the course. A total of 55,662 registrations came in for Bachelor in Arts (BA) this year.

The varsity closed its pre-admission online registration at 5 pm on Monday. Colleges would be declaring the first merit list on Tuesday evening.
