Mumbai ATS to track online activities of Mumbra locals

The officials will also bring under scanner the accounts of suspicious people and legal action will be taken against those who are using social media to hamper peace in Mumbra.

After the National Investigative Agency's major nationwide crack down on ISIS sympathisers across the country, of which one was from Mumbra, now cyber activities of Mumbra residents will come under strict scanner.

Not just the Thane police, but even the Mumbai Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) will be keeping a vigil on the accounts of social networking sites of Mumbra residents, which includes Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, among others. The officials will keep a tab on irrelevant posts being uploaded, which can provoke any individual or a group or hurt sentiments of any particular section of the society.

The officials will also bring under scanner the accounts of suspicious people and legal action will be taken against those who are using social media to hamper peace in Mumbra.

A police official from the Mumbai ATS department, on the condition of anonymity, said, "We have taken this step to control rumours that spread on social networking sites, which poses as a risk for law and order situation. At the same time, we will take legal action against anyone found guilty. We are going through various account and are keeping regular check on any suspicious activity. Mudabbir Shaikh who has been arrested recently was in regular touch with other ISIS members across India."

Sohail Shaikh, a 23-year-old Mumbra resident, said, "As police and other special departments are taking preventive measures to keep an eye on suspicious activities online, as youngsters even we have planned to create a WhatsApp group to fight against ISIS. After the members are confirmed, we will form the group. Keeping a tab on social networking sites will help the cops, but they should also check with residents who rent their homes without any prior check of the tenant."

An official from the Thane commissionerate said, "It is ATS which is keeping a regular watch on any suspicious activities in Mumbra, Kalyan and other areas. If they need any help from us then we will help."
