A driver, who earns Rs 8,000 per month, decided to become rich fast and disappeared with Rs1.28 crore from the van that he was driving on Friday afternoon. The van was later found abandoned at Matunga by the police.

The vehicle had left from the premises of Logicash Solutions Pvt Ltd, a cash management solution provider company in CBD Belapur, to deposit cash in various ATMs across the city. According to the Trombay police, which is investigating the case, the heist was carried within a few hours.

"The van had three of the company's employees, one unarmed guard and the accused driver, Amar Singh, in it. When it stopped at the Central Bank of India ATM in Trombay, three employees and the guard got off to deposit Rs16 lakh in the machine," said Ansar Pirjade, senior police inspector from Trombay police station. "Singh took advantage of the situation and fled from the spot with the van," he added.

As the GPS installed van moved from its location and started heading towards Sion, the company, which had been tracking its movement, alerted the Mumbai police control. "We were informed about the van coming towards our direction by the control. We immediately started nakabandis in the area and increased our patrolling," said a senior police officer who was involved in the operation. He added: "We later found the van abandoned outside the Don Bosco church in Matunga. During our investigation, we came to know that the van had been parked just minutes before the police team arrived there." The Matunga police then immediately informed the Trombay police about the empty van.

"We have detained the three employees and the guard who were with Singh. We have not yet ruled out their involvement as they informed the police about the incident very late," said senior police inspector Pirjade.

"This can't be the handiwork of one man. Some other people are certainly involved in the whole process. Now, it's just a matter of time. We will arrest Singh and recover the money. He is a resident of Navi Mumbai. A team has been sent to his home."
