Mumbai: All-women gang of thieves arrested

According to the police, the gang had five members. While arrested accused Pooja Gupta (35) headed the gang, she was assisted by the other two arrested accused Anuj Jain (25) and Tulsi Yadav (25).

The Matunga police arrested a gang of women burglars involved in various house breakings in the Matunga area and other parts of Mumbai. The all-women gang, according the police, is expert in breaking locks. 

According to the police, the gang had five members. While arrested accused Pooja Gupta (35) headed the gang, she was assisted by the other two arrested accused Anuj Jain (25) and Tulsi Yadav (25). 

“There have been involved quite a few house-breaking cases in the jurisdiction of Matunga police. With the guidance of our seniors, we were investigating the case. A few days back, acting on a tip-off, we came to know about Gupta who was seen in the Matunga area few times,” said an officer on condition of anonymity. 

“Our informers told us that she headed a gang that was involved in house-breaking and it was an all-women gang. On that basis we picked up Gupta who revealed names of her other gang members,” he added. 

The Matunga police on the information provided by Gupta managed to arrest Jain and Yadav too. However, two of the other gang members were able to escape and are still absconding. 

Explaining the modus operandi of the gang, the officer said: “The gang would keep an eye on the houses in quiet neighbourhoods that have been locked for sometime. Later, during afternoons, when generally people are take naps, would quietly break the lock and get inside a house.” 

“The gang was expert in breaking locks and in no time would break open any safe and later escape with the valuables.” The Matunga police recovered valubales worth around Rs2.5 lakh from the arrested accused and are investigating the case further. 

Detection was done by detection officer Mukund Yadav and assistant sub inspector Kamble, women police sub inspector Dangarne, constables Bendkule, Ghuge and Kadam.
