The Byculla police arrested a woman support staff member of a school on Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl.

The female staff (aaya) was also suspended by the school principal on Monday after the victim's parents complained against her for touching the kid inappropriately.

The victim's parents informed the school staff that around two weeks ago, their daughter had started complaining about pain in her private parts and was reluctant to go to school. A medical examination revealed that the pain was a result of physical abuse. The child reportedly told the parents that the aaya touched her private parts.

"The parents approached us with the complaint this morning. After hearing what the child had revealed, we suspended the staffer until a police inquiry in the case is complete," said the school's principal. He added that the staffer has been working for the school for over 25 years and was to retire next year.

Following the complaint, several parents approached the school on Monday. They demanded strict action against the staff member and asked the school authority to ensure that security is beefed up in the school, said a parent

Virendra Mishra, deputy commissioner of police (zone 3) confirmed the arrest
